Our Story
Gafas was the third of our eyewear boutiques and our most detailed vision yet. Our goal is to present fine eyewear with the best possible service – simple.
We started Gafas in 2005 in a small shop on Queen Street West offering only hand selected collections in sunglasses. A year later we moved to our current space and converted our practice to a full optical store. Our motivation is derived from our passion in eyewear and the many facets of customers we get to interact with. Eyewear, unlike many other accessories such as purses or shoes, has traditionally been overlooked as the most important piece of health and fashion accessory. We make it our mission to educate our customers on cutting edge eyewear fashion.
At Gafas we choose handmade eyewear (people driven) versus brand obsessed mass-produced eyewear (corporate driven). This strategy allows us to present eyewear that has an essence of life, is designed with great satisfaction, and is therefore a piece of art on it’s own. Though corporate owned mass produced eyewear brands sell faster due to their immense marketing budgets, Gafas has resisted the temptation most optical stores embrace in order to churn a faster profit.
We pride ourselves in people over profit.
Tony and I travel all over the World, especially to Milan, Paris, London, Amsterdam, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Tokyo to source out the best eyewear collections. Our constant travel gives our team an educated insight into different artisans creating eyewear to present the best of Gafas’ findings to you. Our customers are very dear to us and we take every measure to ensure their eyewear experience is as enjoyable as it is to us dispensing it. Ask our clients and they’ll affirm just that.
Gafas is the only optical shop to introduce the first, and largest, Kings of Past shop-in-shop. Kings of Past is the world leader in original unused vintage eyewear from the 1960’s – 1990’s. The shop-in-shop allows us to present the largest selection of vintage eyeglasses and sunglasses from the Kings of Past vault. So much of today’s fashion is vintage inspired that it is quite rewarding for us to be able to present original vintage eyewear.
As our reputation has grown, we have received numerous requests for personalized service and professional styling advice for music videos, movies and commercial projects. With the understanding that every client’s needs are different, we have been regularly servicing some very note-worthy clientelle (their identities are hidden with their requests) through a very personalized service at locations of their choosing, be it their residence, place of work or hotel. This experience is especially gratifying to us as a sign of our acceptance as the go-to-eyewear-people.
We have some very exciting projects coming up and, in time, we will make these known. As always, we remain open to feedback and hope you will give us the opportunity to service you.
